Bet you never thought you’d be interested in learning some chemistry in your spare time. But here we are. Wondering how many milligrams (mg) are in a drop of CBD oil so you can get the most out of your experience.

Whether you’ve already bought a bottle of CBD oil or you’re still on the hunt for the best product for you, let’s talk CBD dosage. Knowing how many milligrams of CBD are in every drop isn’t just a good conversation starter (they loved it at the pub on Friday, honest), it also plays a big part in the quality of your experience. In other words, how good you’re gonna feel.

Keep reading - take some notes if you need - to find out which CBD dosage is best for you, how to measure your dose correctly and how to get maximum goodness out of every drop.

The potency of CBD oil

The potency (strength) of CBD oil varies across different brands and products. It’s a real mixed bag, so there’s no one clear answer here. To help guide your investigation into CBD dosage and potency, you should know CBD content is expressed in terms of milligrams (mg) of CBD per millilitre (ml).

One single dropper (or pipette) usually equals 1ml.

Anything with less than 15mg of CBD per ml is considered to have low potency. CBD oil with 15-49 mg per ml is about standard, and any oil with 50 mg or more per ml has a high potency.

Here’s where the quick maths comes in. To find out the potency of CBD oil, divide the total amount of CBD in milligrams by the total number of millilitres in the bottle.

Not got a calculator to hand? No stress. You can usually find this info on the product itself or the manufacturer’s website. At Orange County, our labels include all the info you need about CBD potency, plus a QR code that links to lab reports so you know exactly what’s in your stuff.

Knowing the product’s potency is a good place to start in helping you measure out the right CBD dosage. But some more factors come into play - like weight, age and metabolism.

If you’re new here, you’ll probably be wondering how many mg you can take and how often you should take it. The answer depends not only on you - but also on what kind of CBD (and at what strength) is in the bottle.

Let us explain. A 30ml bottle of full-spectrum CBD will usually require a different dose than a 30ml bottle of broad-spectrum CBD to get the same effect. Confused yet?

Don’t be. You may need to do just a little maths to work out how many mg are in each bottle - and a little of your own experimenting to find the CBD dosage that works best for you.

Your experiment should go a little like this:

  1. Use the markings on oil droppers to measure out a dose (start small - you probably don’t need a whole dropper straight-up!)
  2. Make a note of how much oil you used and the effects it had. Jot down the time it took to feel the effects, too.
  3. Gradually increase or decrease your CBD dosage to create the right effects.
  4. If your product’s bottle doesn’t contain a dropper, we recommend running to your local pharmacy or buying one online to get more precise with your measurements!

How much CBD is in a drop?

To find out how many mg of CBD is in a single drop of CBD oil, you’ll need to know:

  1. The amount of liquid in the bottle
  2. The amount of liquid in a dropper
  3. The amount of CBD in the bottle

Let’s take a standard 30ml bottle as an example. As a general rule, a 30ml bottle of regular strength oil contains 500mg of CBD, and a standard-sized dropper/pipette has 1ml of oil.

So you’ll have 30 pipettes-worth of oil, with each pipette containing roughly 16.5mg CBD. We know that because we divided the overall CBD content by the total volume in ml.

Each 1ml pipette contains around 20 drops. Now we know a 30ml bottle contains around 600 drops of CBD oil. (30 pipettes x 20 drops).

To get the total CBD content of each drop, divide the number of drops in the bottle by the overall CBD content in milligrams. A single drop of CBD oil can have a concentration as high as 5mg, but of course, this all depends on the potency of oil and the size of the bottle itself.

New here? Start with a single drop of oil and jot down its effects. If you don’t notice any,  gradually increase the dose and keep on tracking those results. Everyone has different body chemistry, so it’s usually not worth listening to how much CBD your postman or your gran takes.

Even if you fancy yourself as a bit hardcore, be careful not to exceed the FSA recommended limit of 70mg of CBD each day.

Okay, chemistry class dismissed.

Getting the most out of each drop

Your body’s reaction to CBD also depends on how and when you take it. Say you take it first thing in the morning, before you have your Weetabix, it’ll absorb quickly because your stomach’s empty.

If you’re a beginner, start by taking CBD after a filling meal. This will let your body absorb it slowly for maximum effect.

The best way to take CBD oil is to drop it under your tongue and hold it there for 30-60 seconds before swallowing it. In the biz, we call this the “sublingual method”. It allows the body to absorb as much oil as possible directly into your bloodstream through the capillaries in your mouth.

The rest of the CBD is absorbed more slowly through your digestive system when it’s swallowed.

If you’re on medication, have a chat with your doctor before you start taking CBD. If they give the go-ahead to use it alongside your regular medication, we recommend spacing out your doses for minimal interference.
